In 1936, a young athlete by the name of Jesse Owens shocked the world by winning an unprecedented four Gold Medals at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Setting new Olympic records in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, long jump, and sharing the record in the 400-meter relay, Owens instantly established himself as an international hero and role model in the sport of Track and Field. With his great performance, he also gloriously reaffirmed American pride and persistence in the midst of the Great Depression. By earning an eternal place in sports history, Jesse Owens helped open the door for African American athletes.
